watering
Chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis 'Robusta Green') prefers a soil that drains well and requires even, regular moisture. Water the plant when the top inch of soil becomes dry. Provide 1 to 1.5 inches of water once a week to ensure the soil stays moist but not soggy. Water less frequently during cooler months, and water more often during the summer months, especially during periods of high heat and/or very dry weather. Do not allow the plant to sit in waterlogged soil; be sure to water deeply but infrequently.
sunlight
Chinese junipers (Juniperus chinensis 'Robusta Green') require full sun for best growth; partial shade is tolerated but will result in slower growth. The ideal location is 1 that receives 6-8 hours of full sun per day, preferably during the warmer part of the day (morning to late afternoon). If planted in areas that receive less sunlight, Chinese junipers may become leggy and sparse.
pruning
Chinese Juniper should be pruned during the spring, just as new growth begins. Cut away dead or diseased branches, as well as any branches that grow in toward the center, to open up the canopy and keep the foliage healthy. Trim back overcrowded branches and thin out competing branches that grow together. It is best to take off no more than 1-third of the total amount of foliage at a time. Pruning can also be done lightly throughout the growing season to maintain shape and control size.
