Ostrich ferns need consistent and even watering. Water deeply when the soil is dry to the touch, or about once a week during the summer and twice monthly during the winter growing season. Allow the top 2 to 3 inches of soil to dry out before watering. Soak the soil around the fern's roots thoroughly, then wait for the excess water to drain away. Avoid over-watering, as soggy soil can cause root rot, especially during the winter months.

The Ostrich Fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris 'The King') will perform best in moderate to bright light, but should avoid direct midday sunlight. For optimal growing conditions, the fern should receive several hours of bright, indirect sunlight each day. It also appreciates a few hours of shade in the hottest part of the afternoon. In outdoor settings, the fern should be planted in an area that is shaded in the afternoon. Providing filtered light during the brightest part of the day can also be beneficial.

Ostrich Fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris 'The King') does not require regular pruning. However, if desired, a light trimming can be done in early spring before new growth begins. This will help keep its spreading habit neat and contained. Be careful not to prune too severely to avoid disrupting the plant's natural shape. Additionally, dead and damaged fronds should be removed as needed.
